About:

Crude oil desalting is a critical refinery process that protects downstream equipment by removing water, salts, and other contaminants from crude oil before processing. This course provides a practical review of desalter fundamentals, equipment, operating variables, monitoring, troubleshooting, and optimization techniques needed to maintain reliable operation and maximize refinery performance.

What You’ll learn:

Explain the purpose of crude oil desalting and its role in protecting refinery equipment.

Evaluate how crude quality, operating variables, and desalter design affect unit performance.

Identify key desalter components, operating practices, and monitoring techniques.

Apply troubleshooting methods to improve desalting efficiency and refinery reliability.

Who Should Attend:

Crude Oil Desalting is designed for refinery process engineers, operations personnel, and technical service professionals who are involved in crude oil desalting, refinery operations, or process support. The course is also beneficial for engineering and construction professionals supporting refinery process units.

Course Outline:

  1. Benefits of Crude Oil Desalting

  2. Impact of Crude Oil Quality on Desalter Performance

Taught By:

Tom Collins / Sam Lordo

Meet The Instructor:

Tom Collins is President of NEET Corporation. He retired in 2019 as Vice President of Electrostatic Process at Forum Energy Technologies. He began servicing desalters worldwide at Petreco in 1980. His responsibilities have included technical sales, process review, desalter design, troubleshooting, training, optimization, and business development. He has authored and co-authored desalting papers for AIChE and has been active in AFPM, formerly NPRA, for over 30 years.

Sam Lordo is a recognized industry expert with more than 45 years of experience in refinery process chemistry, chemical treatment programs, opportunity crude processing, and crude oil desalting. His career has focused on corrosion prevention, fouling control, failure analysis, and managing integrity risks associated with changing crude slates and refinery process conditions. He has also led the development of chemical treatment strategies, crude contaminant mitigation approaches, and refinery best practices that improve reliability and reduce integrity risk. Sam has contributed to multiple software tools and recommended practices for managing crude desalting, refinery fouling, and corrosion risks, and has participated in the development of four patents. He is active in the Crude Oil Quality Association (COQA), AFPM, and has been a member of NACE for more than 20 years, contributing to technical papers, task groups, and industry conferences. He received the 2016 AFPM Lifetime Achievement Award and holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Missouri–Columbia.
