About:
Delayed coking is a critical heavy oil upgrading process used to maximize refinery value from residual feedstocks. This course provides an in-depth review of delayed coking process technology, including process fundamentals, equipment, operations, safety, reliability, troubleshooting, and optimization. Participants will gain practical knowledge of delayed coking systems, specialty equipment, and operational strategies to improve unit performance and reliability.
What You’ll learn:
Explain delayed coking fundamentals, thermal cracking chemistry, and coke formation.
Evaluate the operation and design of delayed coking equipment, furnaces, coke drums, and supporting systems.
Apply best practices for safe operation, troubleshooting, equipment reliability, and process optimization.
Understand specialty systems, startup and shutdown procedures, and key operating variables that influence delayed coker performance.
Who Should Attend:
Delayed Coking Process Technology is designed for engineers, operations personnel, and refinery service providers seeking a comprehensive understanding of delayed coking process technology, equipment, and operations. Participants should have a foundation in refinery operations, including fractionation, heat balances, pump operation, valve fundamentals, and fluid flow.
Course Outline:
Introduction to Delayed Coking
Feeds, Reactions, and Coke Formation
Coker Feed System
Coker Furnaces
Transfer Line Operations
Coke Drum Operations
Key Performance Variables
Specialty Equipment
Coke Handling Systems
Coker Water Systems
Special Procedures
Taught By:
Mitch Moloney
Meet The Instructor:
Mitchell J. Moloney has over 40 years of petroleum refining process engineering experience, including 40 years with ExxonMobil. He specializes in delayed coking, with experience spanning project design, commissioning, startup, troubleshooting, and operational safety improvements.
He led scoping and design for a $1.2 billion Northwest Europe upgrader project and supported major coker safety upgrades at Beaumont, Campana, Chalmette, Torrance, and Joliet. His work includes coke drum systems, automation and interlocks, blowdown systems, and operator safety. He also led the Delayed Coker Best Practice Network and developed more than 200 delayed coker best practices.
Mr. Moloney holds a BS in Chemical Engineering, summa cum laude, from Princeton University and is a Registered Professional Engineer in New Jersey and Texas. He has trained technicians and engineers in Spanish and also communicates in French and Dutch.
Venue:
The training will be held in Houston, TX. The exact location will be announced by mid-November. Please check back for updates. If you purchase the class, you can find the hotel booking link under My Courses → (your course) → Resources once available.
