Levels and experience are guidelines based on topic-specific experience. All courses support foundational and advanced learning.
About:
This course provides an in-depth review of amine treating and sour water stripping processes used throughout petroleum refineries. Participants develop a practical understanding of amine chemistry, absorber and regenerator operation, corrosion management, troubleshooting, startup and shutdown procedures, process optimization, and sulfur recovery unit (SRU) feed preparation. The course emphasizes best practices that improve operational reliability, process performance, and knowledge sharing across refinery treating operations.
What You’ll Learn:
- Explain the fundamentals of amine treating and sour water stripping processes.
- Evaluate absorber and regenerator chemistry, mass transfer, and operating performance.
- Apply troubleshooting, corrosion management, and inventory management practices to improve unit reliability.
- Optimize sour water stripping operations, steam utilization, and sulfur recovery unit feed preparation.
Who Should Attend:
Amine Treating & Sour Water Stripping Process is designed for refinery process engineers, unit operations personnel, refinery technical service professionals, and engineers supporting refinery design, construction, or process technology. The course is also valuable for managers seeking a practical understanding of amine treating operations.

Taught By:
Al Keller
Meet The Instructor:
Alfred E. (Al) Keller brings 35 years of experience in refinery treating and sulfur processing, including serving as Director of Treating and Sulfur Processing for Conoco, ConocoPhillips, and Phillips 66. He holds 32 U.S. patents and helped develop commercial technologies for amine purification, sulfur degassing, and sulfur recovery. Al has delivered training for ConocoPhillips/Phillips 66 and Brimstone STS on amine treating, sour water, sulfur recovery, and related processes. He now provides consulting services through Becht.
