TRAINING DAYS: | 4 Days | PDH: | 32 Hours |
DISCIPLINE: | Mechanical Engineering | LEVEL: | Core Skill |
CATEGORY: | Codes and Standards | SUGGESTED EXPERIENCE: | 1–5 years |
TRAINING MAP: | Fixed Equipment Engineer | ||
Levels and experience are guidelines based on topic-specific experience. All courses support foundational and advanced learning.
About:
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to pressure vessel design in accordance with the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII, Division 1. Participants learn the Code requirements for pressure vessel design, including general design rules, material requirements, welded joint design, and vessel component design. The course emphasizes practical application of ASME Section VIII, Division 1 design principles.
What You’ll learn:
Understand the philosophy and failure modes addressed by ASME Section VIII, Division 2, Part 5.
Apply Design-By-Analysis methodologies using finite element analysis in accordance with the Code.
Evaluate pressure vessels for plastic collapse, local failure, buckling, ratcheting, and fatigue.
Develop fatigue loading histories and understand fatigue assessment methods for weldments.
Prepare Design-By-Analysis documentation consistent with ASME Code requirements.
Who Should Attend:
ASME Section VIII, Division 2 – Part 5, Design-By-Analysis is designed for engineers involved in pressure vessel or piping design who already have a working knowledge of pressure vessel design and need additional guidance in applying ASME Section VIII, Division 2, Part 5 Design-By-Analysis methods. Familiarity with finite element fundamentals is beneficial but not required.

Taught By:
Trevor Seipp
Meet The Instructor:
Trevor Seipp has over twenty-three years of experience in the design, analysis, review, and failure analysis of process equipment, pressure vessels, piping, and structures. His expertise includes linear and nonlinear finite element analysis using ANSYS and ABAQUS, buckling analysis, heat transfer, thermal stress analysis, fitness-for-service evaluations, fatigue assessment, and piping flexibility. At Becht, he has performed numerous finite element evaluations and developed the company's four-day Design-By-Analysis course based on ASME Section VIII, Division 2, Part 5. He serves on multiple ASME committees, including the Board on Pressure Technology Codes and Standards, the Section VIII Subgroup on Design, the Subgroup on Interpretations, and the Working Group on Design-By-Analysis. He is an ASME Fellow and has authored numerous conference papers, journal articles, and technical presentations. Before joining Becht, he worked for Fluor, Syncrude, Wascana Energy, and Imperial Oil. He holds an M.Sc. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Minnesota and a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan and is a licensed professional engineer in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario.
Venue:
Training will be held at the Becht Calgary Office, located at 160 Quarry Park Blvd., Calgary, Alberta T2C 3G3, Canada.
